The 30-minute Toolbox Workshops are designed to fit into the traditional ‘Toolbox’ meeting slot and can cater for up to 25 participants at one time. Using a simulated full-size road environment, drivers learned about what safe passing and following feels like (from a cyclist’s perspective) when driving, and why people on bicycles ride where they do.

The participants used cutouts of a car, a truck cab and a cyclist printed on PVC sheets. The Toolbox Workshop requires an open space with a minimum area of 8mx8m.

After a workshop in Pokeno, facilitator Julian Hulls said every one of the 15 drivers came up to him, shook his hand, thanked him and said how much the workshop had helped them understand what good road sharing with cyclists looks and feels like.
